For The Guys. I went to The Smoke Pit for the first time with husband and some family members for a fairly crowded lunch shift. The place is very laidback and casual, with all kinds of paraphernalia on the walls and large flat panel TVs, some displaying sports and one toward the door displaying the security feed that overlooks the parking lot. You know you're in Fort Worth (and a guy-dominated section of FW at that!) when you see this AND all the vehicles in the parking lot are trucks! No offense to anyone, I love FW and found this greatly amusing! It didn't take long before I realized that I was in the minority when I saw that aside from the waitstaff, I was one of only about 5 girls in the place. The waitstaff, on the other hand, looked young, perky and "curvy". AAAHHHH! Now I get it! Still, I found this very entertaining. However, that's where the fun ended when the waitress got 3 out of 6 of our orders wrong, forgot the baked potatoes that had been ordered, didn't bring them out until more than halfway through the meal, completely skipped one person in our party who had to wait for his food for another 10 min. after the rest of us were served and then asked us if we wanted anything else because she was "cut" and wanted to close out and leave. In addition, the ribs and chopped beef I sampled were very bland, no smoke flavor at all. Still, for a place like this, I don't really hold that against them. I had to be honest in my rating, but hiccups like these are minor when you're talking about a place this casual. Obviously, the element that gets AIS (a**** in seats) is the waitstaff. I don't know that I'd ever want to come back, but I would still recommend the place to all my guy friends. It's fun for them, the girls are cute, the food is substantial and the beer is cheap. Sometimes, that's all a guy wants and this place fits that bill.
Bucolic barbecue joint keeps on rolling..
In Short
Since 1953, the Smoke Pit in Ft. Worth has been a staple for finger-licking good barbecue. Worn wood paneling and railing, checkered tablecloths along with copious road signs, neon beer signs, license plates and posters make for a perfectly ramshackle atmosphere. The menu is headed up by sliced or chopped beef sandwich baskets, sausage and ham. Sides include cheese sticks, fried okra, jalapeno poppers and Buffalo wings. Kids can grab a corn dog, chicken strips or a grilled cheese sandwich.
