Best Reubens. I have been eating here for more than 20 years and after having eaten at some of the best delis in New York and Chicago, Carshons is still my favorite. Hot, juicy, succulent sandwiches, crisp bagel chips and chocolate pie better than my grandma's. A great place to see some of Fort Worth's most influential people. Mary is always there to visit with customers and the staff is always friendly and fast. Give it a try - I promise you won't be disappointed.
So you want a good Reuben?.
No, I was not around when Reubens were served up at the Blackstone Hotel, however, I have been to my fair share of delis; this one is a keeper. Agreed, Carshon?s is not in an upper scale area. If you're looking to see and be seen, do yourself a favor, head over to Highland Park in Dallas. If you are looking for great food, then head over.
Walking in I was greeted to sit anywhere I would like. The dinning area is well lit and maintained. Our server promptly took drink orders and returned without delay. For those who wish to partake in an adult beverage, enjoy a wide selection of beer and wine.
I ordered a whole specialty sandwich, the Reuben with corned beef, and let the server know I was saving room for the homemade chocolate pie. She was kind enough to inform me the pie might be gone if I waited; I went ahead and placed my pie order with my meal. Side items are a la carte.
The sandwich was absolutely delicious! Rye bread perfectly grilled with butter rendering the outer part golden brown and the inner soft and moist. Interesting, the sandwich bread is from Highland Park Bakery. (For those of you who feel a touch of Highland Park is missing).
Corned beef was piled high and nestled on top was Swiss and sauerkraut. The sauerkraut was not over powering and the flavors harmonized together quite nicely. Along the side was a crunchy spear of dill pickle comparable to a Claussen's Kosher.
After polishing off my Reuben, out came a large slice of chocolate pie. I bake pie myself. Restaurant pies almost never have a crust that merits consumption. The crust on Carshon?s pie has a flaky texture and delightful flavor, chocolate filling was still warm, and piled on top was a lofty layer of meringue golden brown on its wisps.
Side notes: the service is prompt, beverages refilled without asking, no refills on canned soda, bill easily separated - payment at the register, remember to bring cash (Carshon?s does not take credit cards).
Avoid this place.
I have been to delicatessens and specialty food shops the world over. Carshon's is the worst delicatessen and one of the worst restaurants overall, at which I have been a patron. The restaurant is run-down and seedy looking, and so is the surrounding neighborhood. I can see why they close at 3PM; you would not want to be in this neighborhood after dark. It does not look or smell like a deli......if you have been to Katz' in NYC, you know what I mean. My friend and I ordered a corned beef on rye and a pastrami on rye, respectively. The rye bread was ersatz/immitation like white bread with a few seeds in it. The meat on both sandwiches looked like it had been laying around for a while...not fresh and juicy like it should be.
I figured we would order a couple of the basic staple type sandwiches that a deli should be good at preparing before we went for anything more fancy. What a disappointment after driving for thirty minutes from northeast Fort Worth. Don't waste your time or your money making a trip to this place. If you want something that even begins to approach what a deli meat sandwich should taste like, try Weinberger's in Grapevine. At least the meat in the sandwiches is good there.
