Tips for Sweet Tomatoes

5.0
September 08, 2008

A little taste of home for me!. I lived in San Diego until I was 30, and one restaurant I really miss is Souplantation. This is the same company, and I LOVE having a Sweet Tomatoes just a couple of miles from me now.

Souplantation is famous (oddly, but with good reason) for their clam chowder. At Sweet Tomatoes it's not on the soup bar every day, so if you see it, GRAB A BOWL. Delicious, but I have also become a fan of the Posole (Mexican/Southwestern-y with hominy). GREAT with some cilantro and a squeeze of lime. My 4-year-old loves the Big Chunk Chicken Noodle, and they are not joking - the chicken is HUGE pieces, with homemade noodles.

Of course the muffins and breads are yummy, and they have some good drinks - try the strawberry green iced tea when they have it. They usually have a couple of pasta choices, but I hardly ever have room - no matter how easy I think I'm taking it!

But of course the star is the salad bar - SO fresh. 24 hours from harvest to truck! They're MILES better than any other soup/salad restaurant I've been to, and quality is a big part of the difference. The bar itself has tossed salads, about 35' of an incredible array of salad ingredients, then a few more prepared salads, like potato salad, chopped broccoli salad and pasta salads.

YUM.

A few tips:

*Sign up for emails to get a steady supply of coupons, usually weekday twofers.

*EVERYTHING's tempting, I know - but be conservative the first time through or you won't be able to try all the other goodness... be strong! It's worth it!

*Bring kid's cups back for free refills. I've vowed to keep two in the car for the inevitable last-minute "can we have Sweet Tomatoes tonight?"

*Come back - they change themes periodically (this spring there was a strawberry, a cherry & a lemon month; right now it's different countries) so there will be new items often!

*Fresh each day has many benefits: if you're there right before closing, you'll probably get free cookies. Just sayin'.

Go! Yes, NOW - go!
